OK - I'm a little late with this entry. You've already heard the stories, seen the news, and if you live anywhere in the midwest, you've done your share of shoveling! Looking back to Tuesday, the thing that still amazes me is all of the naysayers that swore it was going to miss us. Not that we haven't had our share of near misses over the years. But this time was different. This time EVERYONE in the weather business agreed - it wasn't a question of IF, or even WHEN. The only real question was HOW MUCH SNOW.

I had planned on leaving work early - but one thing led to another, and by the time I left the snow was flying. The amazing thing was it went from nothing to blizzard in a matter of minutes. Out on the road it was one patch of white-out after another. Cars were already in the ditches, and in places it was difficult to see where the road was. Eventually we made it home and to the local gas station for a can of gas for the snow blower. Then we lit a fire and settled in for the blast. Really expected to lose power, but we were very fortunate, and the lights stayed on.

Next morning, it was still blowing hard. Drifts everywhere so it was difficult to tell just how much snow had fallen. We had a drift on the deck that was half way up the patio door. Our street had not been plowed so the view out the front door was really a winter wonderland - no car tracks, no footprints, just gusting snow, and white everywhere.

Thank god for snowblowers. A few years ago, my father-in-law got one for me and my brother-in-law, Roger, to share (he lives across the street). Best Christmas gift ever! So after they finally got around to plowing our street (2pm or so) Roger did his drive, then brought over the trusty machine.



It was slow but steady until we had it all cleared out. The front of the drive (where the plow had dumped the snow from the road) is always a challenge. By then it had stopped blowing, so it stayed clear. Then it was back in front of the fire with a glass of scotch. Later we watched "Ground Hog Day" - perfect ending to a perfect snow day.
